Event 11714: The older version of Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client cannot be removed. On the internet I found related topics with the solution to use the Microsoft fix tool. This tool isn't available for Windows 10. Is there a new fix tool for this or is there an instruction to manual remove all old files and registry settings? 3.1.04059 and 2 versions before that. The normal operation is.you upload the latest version to the ASA, and identify that version as a supported client version. Then the next time anyone connects to the VPN with anyconnect.the anyconnect client auto updates (removing the previous version and installing the newer). I guess that the removal of the old version was incomplete and that the new installation is trying to remove files and/or registry settings but is missing an uninstallation file. Introduction

The Older Version Of Cisco Anyconnect Cannot Be Removed

This document describes a problem that is encountered when the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client does not upgrade properly after a Microsoft Windows system restore is completed. A solution to this problem is also described.

Prerequisites

Requirements

Cisco recommends that you have knowledge of these topics:

  • Basic knowledge of the upgrade and deployment procedures for the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Windows

Components Used

The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:

The Older Version Of Cisco Anyconnect Cannot Be Removed Without

  • Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Versions 3.x and 4.x
  • Microsoft Windows® Version 7
  • Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Versions 8.2 and later

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Problem

The AnyConnect Client fails to upgrade when:

  • The Cisco ASA has AnyConnect Client Version X configured.
  • The Microsoft Windows machine at some point in the recent past has had Version X or later installed.
  • The system administrator completed a machine restore on Microsoft Windows to a point in time where the AnyConnect Client Version Y was installed, and Version Y is older than Version X.

In this situation, after the system restores and the next time that a user connects from the machine, the expected behavior is for the AnyConnect Client to upgrade itself because it runs an earlier version than that which is configured on the ASA; however, this does not occur.

Solution

When a VPN connection is initiated to a head-end, the AnyConnect Client does a comparison of the version that is currently installed on the machine and that which is configured on the ASA. In order to complete this comparison, it uses the information that is stored in the VPNManifestClient.xml file and/or the VPNManifest.dat file. If the version in the manifest file is earlier than the version that is stored on the head-end, and if the client profile is not configured in order to bypass the downloader, then the AnyConnect Client automatically initiates the process and upgrades itself.

Tip: On a Microsoft Windows machine, these two files are stored in this location: C: > ProgramData > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.

In the previous scenario, before the system restore was completed, the manifest files indicated correctly that the AnyConnect Client ran Version X or later. However, after the system restore was completed, even though the AnyConnect Client version was downgraded, the manifest file was not modified. This occurs because the files are considered personal documents by Microsoft Windows and are not modified back to the old version. Instead, these files report the version that used to work prior to the system restore.

In order to resolve this problem, you must delete both of the files (VPNManifestClient.xml and VPNManifest.dat), which should trigger the software upgrade during the next connection attempt.

Use Microsoft's Windows Installer Cleanup utility to delete the corrupt installer of the other BOINC package. It'll either be in the list as a corrupt (nameless) package or as BOINC.

I did try that, and it didn't find anything.

Is the BOINC folder still hanging around after you run the uninstall? If so, try deleting it andf all its subfolders, then try to install the newer version.

He can't uninstall, is what the problem is.
MrNate, there is another option: Reinstall the previous version of BOINC that you had, thereby fixing the installer. You can then uninstall it.
If you no longer have the BOINC installer, please tell which BOINC version you have.

Attempts to reinstall earlier versions have so far proved unsuccessful. This all started when I attemted to upgrade to Windows version 5.4.11.

No, it has started way before that. What you have is a damaged installer/uninstaller. If the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility cannot find the damaged installation file, then you need to reinstall the exact same version of BOINC that you have at present on your system.
By starting the installer on that version and pointing it to the same directory you installed Boinc to the previous time, you will get the chance to repair the previous installation. So you can immediately uninstall that version through add/remove programs. The only option to uninstall any BOINC version is through add/remove programs. There won't be an Uninstall Boinc option in the Boinc directory or in Start->Programs->Boinc.
Make sure your XP is updated far enough that it has the Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) installed.
If you no longer have the installation version of the Boinc you have at present on your system, we may be able to link you to it. Therefore we need the Boinc version you are running or trying to uninstall. So not 5.4.11, as that is the one you are trying to update to, but the previous version. If in doubt, start Boinc Manager, Help, About Boinc Manager. Cite the version number.

Ahh, I'm looking at the main page showing all the old boinc versions and I don't see or remember 5.3.18, so I can't link it for you. Are you sure it's that? I'd be happy to link any that exist there. The list goes 5.3.16, 5.3.17, then jumps to 5.3.20.

Hello Tony,
Thanks for your reply.
The version number was mentioned in the windows installer cleanup application.
It was, before I went crazy and manually deleted all boinc references.
Maybe it was a BBC climate change 'special' version number.
My problems started when I lost a harddisk and the *.msi installer files were lost also.
I managed to fix all the applications installation by reinstalling the original or newer and using win installer files cleanup application.
I wish I could start crunching again.

Yes, You have jogged what's left of my memory, but I do seem to remember some specially built versions for bbc.
Are you still not getting work?

Hello again,
Nope I have tried installing older boinc versions but they give the same error when installing. I can't find the 5.3.18 on the BBC site or anywhere on the net.
I can't install the program nomore. Maybe if i could find out what the windows install cleanup aplication exactly removed, I could figure out what to delete manually.
I have the feeling it can't be that difficult to fool the installation routine in believing no boinc app was installed already?
I am not crunching and silently hoping a new version will circumvent this error. I hope the aliens never find out the trouble we have with teh installation of msi based applications...

Did you also clean the registry?
I'm not sure if the BBC client has its own registry key, but BOINC's registry entry sits at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareSpace Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley
In the mean time I'll see if Carl (from CPDN) has 5.3.18 ...

OK, according to Carl the BBC version never changed. So if you download it again, it's got to be the same version.

Ok, I am getting the exact same problem. Error 1714. I manually removed everything BOINC from my computer. I even cleaned out all references to BOINC in my registry. I still get the error, and I can't install BOINC. I ran the Windows Installation thingy, and there is nothing about BOINC, and no blank ones.So what's my next move?I am the ONLY SANE 1 HERE!!!!

I have also tried to install the earliest version I could find, which was 4.45. Still got 1714. I really miss SETI classic. That was so easy to fix. I am the ONLY SANE 1 HERE!!!!

Have you tried the Microsoft Installer cleaner as suggested in the second post in this thread.
